Yes, the Whitecaps are joining the MLS in a couple of years. Yes, BC Place is going to get a crazy ass upgraded roof which will make it a must see venue once more. The big question that seems to slide around the streets, while folks are trying to reserve season tickets to this team is what happens to them in the meantime?
You see, at the moment the Whitecaps call the United Soccer League home, and the owner of the league made what amounted to a farewell gesture to the Caps and the Montreal Impact. However, Duzzi and the boys are still looking at a an alternate league, a kind of ‘owners league’.
This new league, the Team Owners Association (TOA) is 8 USL teams who decided to look into other options after the USL was sold to NuRock Soccer Holdings. Confused yet?
The Whitecaps would only kick about in the league until 2011, that’s when they join the MLS. However, Lenarduzzi did hint at the chance of some sort of Vancouver connection remaining in the TOA, sounding like a ‘farm team’.
Soccer is growing in popularity right across the country with the success of teams in Toronto, Montreal, and now with the Caps joining the MLS.
