Vancouver City Council to decide MMA fate Thursday

UFC fans, your decision day is tomorrow. Vancouver City Council will put the entire debate of mma regulations to a yea or nay vote Thursday. The question? Can this sport be run safely, and can the city turn a profit on it on a local level.

First off, if you’ve seen ppv sales and bars during UFC main events, the question of turning profit should be easily answered. Can the sport be run safely? Unless, they have a group of oompa loompas running the show, they should be okay.

UFC representatives Mike Mersch (General Counsel) and Lawrence Esptein (Exec VP) will both be at the meeting, which will actually be open to the public. Two councilors, Heather Deal and Kerry Jang both attended a recent local mma production, and both came away impressed and pleased at the professionalism, safety, and officiating. In other words? They likely saw dollar signs.

COPE councilor David Cadman is still strongly opposed to the whole deal (shocking), citing young people getting riled up by violence and heading out to start shit. Apparently the Cadman family home doesn’t have a television or a thing called the internet.

Word is that even if this ruling goes against the MMA trend, the UFC will still go ahead with a one night only event in June 2010. If it’s a yes? Well, they should have a date and somewhat of a card mapped out within the month. Once Vancouver is taken care of? Then it’s on to Toronto, and the Rogers Center, that’s right, the Rogers Center. We’re talking world records.
