Why? Because they’re both scummy. Even when Cooke wore Canuck colors we weren’t big fans. He’s a dirty, cheap shot artist. But, he’s not just that, he’s a bit of a coward too. He’s that guy you know who wants all the attention, he’s got little man syndrome, and he’s partly to blame for the Bertuzzi/Moore incident. That’s right, we said it.
Let’s start from the beginning, Cooke or Cookie or Cooker, or whatever they’re calling him these days always started things, but never finished them. He’d pick fights throw punches, give face washes, then scurry away. He’d turtle in fights, but worst of all, he’d pull teammates into the fray. I don’t know how many times I’d see a Canuck forward or defenseman jump in to fight his battles. You can only imagine, how many players in the room wanted to take a shot at him. People who remember him fondly, remember that last second goal against Calgary in the playoffs. John Shorthouse’s call of ‘Matt Cooke, Matt Cooke, Matt Cooke. Don’t be confused, that play was all Markus Naslund.
The only bad thing about the Penguins winning the Cup last season was the fact that a marginal player like Cooke would get a ring. He’s continued his idiocy with a cheap ass head shot to Artem Anisimov in a recent Pens/Rangers game. Cooke was given a two minute penalty for interference. Donal Brashear tried to exact his own justice when Cooke came out of the box, but to no avail. Cooke then took on Ryan Callahan. You see, Cooke only fights none-fighters, guys who just try to stand up for their teammates. The funny thing? Cooke doesn’t even really win those scraps, they’re usually just hugging sessions.
So, why do we think Cooke is partly to blame for the Bertuzzi/Moore incident? Because he ruined the plan. You ask any fan, any player in both locker rooms as to who should go after Steve Moore, the last name would be Matt Cooke. But, of course, he tried to steal a little limelight, he jumps in and doesn’t take the decision in the fight. Hell, some would say that Moore won the fight hands down. Cooke in the meantime gives a false sense of closure to Moore, and makes himself look like an ass at the same time. The entire Canucks bench cannot be convinced that Moore laying a whooping on Cooke is justice for the Naslund hit. Especially Todd Bertuzzi. If Matt Cooke hadn’t fought Steve Moore, someone a whole lot more capable would’ve, and it probably would’ve ended there.
