Call Me Up Before You Go Go
When Kash Heed was introduced as BC Solicitor General many thought he’d be all over the street violence, while he’s making a bit of a mark on the streets, it’s not so much against gangs.
Heed introduced a bill that would stop drivers from using their mobile phones while driving, unless the phone is connected to a hands free device. Those drivers who fall under the ‘learners’ or ‘novice’ program are not able to use any kind of communication device. Of course, not just mobile phones are prohibted, any hand held electronic device is included in the proposed ban. That would include GPS units, calculators, and MP3 players (including iPod’s). You’re also not allowed to manually program or adjust your GPS console while driving, that must be done prior to. Not too sure how they’re going to distinguish that with changing a radio station.
Of course, Vancouver wouldn’t be the first place to be putting this into place, these types of bans are pretty prevalent around the world. We’re pretty okay with the new proposed legislation if it ultimately means lives saved that’s a good thing. One thing we can predict is an insane increase in the number of ‘hands free’ products sold in stores.
Personally, I’ve never been too concerned about the number of drivers using cell phones, it’s the ladies applying makeup, and the guys who are leaning so far back while driving that they can just barely see over the dashboard.
Of course, the bus drivers doing Sudoku puzzles are kinda freaky too.
By the way, if you’re wondering, get caught being a chatty Cathy while driving, and you’re looking at a $1t67 fine.
