Behind Lower Mainland School Names

There are a ton of buildings built around the world named after companies, and there’s a ton named after people Many of these buildings are schools, so we take a look at who is behind many of these.

John Oliver Secondary
John Oliver was a politician and farmer in BC in the early 1900′s. He ultimately became premier of BC, and his government was responsible for developing the produce industry in the Okanagan Valley. He’s also the dude in the picture.

Kwantlen Univeristy
“Kwantlen” means “Tireless Runner” and is derived from the First Nations people who established their home in the region served by Kwantlen.

Simon Fraser University
Simon Fraser was a fur trader and an explorer, and is said to have charted much of what is now known as British Columbia, he set up trading posts, and also explored what is now known as the ‘Fraser River’.

Langara College
Langara College was named after the community it was started in back in 1994, the community was named after Spanish Admiral, Juan de Langara.

Lord Byng
Lord Byng was the 12th Governor General of Canada, he ultimately was an officer who performed valiantly in World War I, and continued to receive praise and titles throughout his life. He is now referred to as the Viscount Byng of Vimy.

Eric Hamber
Eric Hamber a businessman and also the 15th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Hamber developed the Minnekhada Lodge in Coquitlam, and when Queen Elizabeth II was married, Hamber and his wife were the only two Canadian private guests.

David Thompson
Wikipedia states that Thompson was was an English-Canadian fur trader, surveyor, and map-maker, known to some native peoples as “Koo-Koo-Sint” or “the Stargazer”. Over his career he mapped over 3.9 million square kilometers of North America and for this has been described as the “greatest land geographer who ever lived.”
