Releasing your Super Bowl ad early might not be the worst idea, you create some viral buzz right off the hop with that group that is pretty tuned in online, and the ad still generates attention from those watching on Super Bowl Sunday. Companies are committed to trying everything to create a splash, and differentiate themselves. Babies, animals, celebrities, sex, and big budget special effects are all commonplace on the big day. Check out three ads below, all centred around celebrity, and while H&M counts on David Beckhams nakedness, Honda and Acura rely on some good old nostalgia with a famous flair. Which do you think is best?

Remember when the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air series changed Aunt Vivian’s? That sucked.Apparently, it sucked more for the first Aunt Vivian, as the move wasn’t voluntary. Janet Hubert-Whitten played Vivian Banks from seasons 1 -3, a total of 70 episodes. Daphne Maxwell Reid took over the role for the last 3 seasons, a total of 57 episodes. The stronger performer of the two was no doubt, the first Aunt Vi, Hubert-Whitten, and she was obviously the more upset of the two regarding the switch, and blames Will Smith for the whole switch.

“There will never be a reunion as I will never do anything with an asshole like Will Smith. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”

My word. What would little Nicky think of that language?

So, what happened exactly? Well, Hubert-Whitten, the first Vi, got pregnant, which was worked into the storyline, and she subsequently demanded more money, which was based on a seniority level – the more episodes you star in, the more seniority you get. With Hubert-Whitten being pregnant, the story lines weren’t constructed in such a way to give her so many episodes, which she thought was unfair, and raised a bit of a stink. At that point, Will Smith went ‘Uncle Phil on DJ Jazzy Jeff’, and threw her out. Check out this compilation of some classic Season One clips from the show.

Rick Santorum is a Republican politician, who was a lawyer before getting involved with politics, and acted as a representative, then a senator, and is now a candidate for the 2012 Republican Party presidential primaries. He was once considered an underdog, but recently won the Iowa caucuses, vaulting him back to the front of the leadership race. His time as senator saw him sponsor the Workplace Religious Freedom Act with US Senator John Kerry.

Dan Savage is a columnist, and, a gay rights activist, and, has a column, Savage Love, that is shared through countless publications, including local rag, The Georgia Straight. Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, actually began the It Gets Better project to help prevent suicide amongst LGBT youth.

So, how, you must wonder, do these two people, likely, on two different ends of the political spectrum cross paths? Well, through Santorum’s stance on homosexuality and gay marriage, but, you’re likely wondering, there’s lots of politicians that are against gay marriage and such, and there’s lots columnists that aren’t, why these two? To understand that, you have to understand the level of idiocy in Santorum’s comments.

In 2003, the AP was interviewing Santorum, and asked his views on the child sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Santorum responded by stating that the priests were engaged in ‘a basic homosexual relationship’, and went on to say that he had a ‘problem with homosexual acts’. Apparently, he doesn’t have a problem with paedophiles dressed up as priests. He continued that marriage was ‘one thing’, a relationship between a man and a woman, and he knew of no society, in history that treated it otherwise. He ultimately, juxtaposed same-sex marriage with the notion of marriage based on paedophilia or bestiality.

The fact that a member of public office, and now, a potential candidate for the US presidency, could come up with logic so ludicrous is nothing short of shocking, until you start actually paying attention to politics and politicians in general. His statement, drew a strong response from Savage, who launched a contest to coin a new definition for the word ‘santorum’. The winning definition is nothing short of awesome. Savage, set up a website that would keep the ‘slang definition’ of santorum alive and well on the internet. The site is a top result when searching for Rick Santorum, and political pundits refer to it as ‘Santorum’s Google problem’. Santorum actually tried to lobby Google to remove the search result, a request Google turned down, no wonder as Savage has been an invited speaker at the Google campus in regards to his It Gets Better campaign.

So, what is the definition?

Santorum is the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes a byproduct of anal sex.

Of course it is.

It’s pretty mind blowing that No Doubt released their self titled debut album back in 1992, a full twenty years ago. However, it wasn’t until 1996, and their third studio album, Tragic Kingdom, that they received real commercial success. That’s when they released the track, ‘Don’t Speak’, an instant hit. That track catapulted them to commercial and critical acclaim, and they followed it up with a number of hits singles, and records, not to mention countless awards, including Grammys for Best New Artist, and Best Rock Album.

Lead singer Gwen Stefani, took on a side solo project, and achieved massive success, with two absolute smash hit records, she has since returned to the studio with No Doubt, and No Doubt’s sixth album is expected to be released sometime this year, and have said to have collaborated with Diplo and Switch. Check out this stellar performance of ‘Don’t Speak’ in Bangkok, Thailand.

Goalies have always been a little crazy, that’s a known fact. Hell, I always think of Dallas players sharing stories of a naked Eddie Belfour lying on the dressing room floor doing meditation exercises, when I hear about how goalies are ‘one man armies’. They’re the kind of players that you expect to get along really well with Phil Jackson and his peyote retreats. That being said, there aren’t many goalies that make headlines for off ice activities, they’re already seen as slightly quirky, and some of them tie themselves off from the media, every chance they get, so visibility isn’t really there.

Now, Tim Thomas did the opposite, he decided not to attend the White House honouring a Bruins team that won the Stanley Cup last year. He did so, stating in a statement on Facebook (I thought college girls just poked each other on there), for personal reasons, citing that the government was too involved in the people’s affairs. Now, with a democratic government, it’s pretty well expected that he’s going to be made fun of, and poked at by all sorts of media and personalities, but is it really justified? Well, the answer is complicated. Muhammed Ali, has been lauded for his political and social involvement just as much as his boxing record, which is saying a heck of a lot. Hell, some see, Ali as a face for civil rights more than as a boxer. Steve Nash raised eyebrows when he spoke out against the War in Iraq a few years back, and Don Cherry raises a few eyebrows every weekend – and that’s just with his outfits. Here’s the difference between those acts, and what Tim Thomas did. Tim Thomas chose a team even to make an individual statement. The backlash he got is part and parcel with any athlete speaking out – it’s not something that’s justified or not justified, it’s part of the whole deal. Can you imagine how choked Tim Thomas would be if no one cared or noticed that he didn’t show up? Heck, this is the guy who has cited Glenn Beck as a hero, and I don’t think Glenn Beck’s own family cites him as a hero.

Now, I’m not speaking as a republican or democrat, and I’m not so sure I’d care who is in the Oval Office, but, if I got the invite to check the joint out, I’d take them up on the offer. Tim Thomas not showing up makes a statement, but it’s not political in nature, nor is it really effective. The fact that he posted a statement on Facebook makes it even weirder. Tim Thomas was effectively the girlfriend that refuses to go to a restaurant for birthday party, because a waitress once upon a time was rude to her. It’s not about you sunshine.

How Canadian is the Sasquatch? Well, about as Canadian as the Moose, because it’s getting it’s own quarter, and it’s colour! The Royal Canadian Mint is releasing a series called Canadian Mythical Creatures, and the hairy beast is the first to be featured in the series.

The coin itself is a cool aerial perspective of the beast looking up at you, he was said to be about 10ft tall, and weighing over 500 pounds, so it’s no wonder the coin barely contains his frame. Pretty frickin’ cool.
