The Grey Cup takes place this season in Vancouver, home of the BC Lions, and amidst a ton of speculation, the Grey Cup committee announced ‘Imagine Dragons’ as the half time performer during the championship game. The CFL has had some big names in music, Celine Dion, Gordon Lightfoot, Lenny Kravitz, Shania Twain, and Justin Bieber (I didn’t say good), and there’s always plenty of debate around who will perform.
Everyone in Canada accepts the fact that the Grey Cup probably won’t draw names like the Superbowl does, U2 aren’t really lining up outside of McMahon Stadium. That leads to die hard CFL fans trying to fill the caveat of ‘must be Canadian’, which is fine and dandy, this country has provided the world with some exceptional musical talents, but you can’t be catering to your die hard, regular customers through the half time show, those fans will show up regardless. What the league wants to do is draw some eyes that they don’t normally draw – younger people. Imagine Dragons aren’t THE band to draw that market in, but, they are one of them. They’re also loud enough, and strong enough as live performers that they make some new fans. The Black Eyed Peas, this is not.
