Oscar Noms Drop…
Today, the nominees for the 2011 Academy Awards were announced, and I go the same feeling I did this year, as I did last year. No, not constipation, a little Pepto solved that issue. But, I found myself saying, ‘why are there 10 Best Picture nominations..oh yeah, they changed it, what a load of shit’. When you have 10 pictures nominated, is it really such a honor just to be nominated? I mean, realistically there’s only about 15 solid movies a year, and in years past, it used to be a bit of a grind to get down to 5. Now, it’s who’s campaigned the best? And, oh yeah, these movies were pretty good too, let’s throw them in as well.
A few things that stand out? Toy Story 3 in the Best Picture category, my thought is that if Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, or Finding Nemo didn’t win a Best Picture, there’s no reason why TS3 should. Jeff Bridges is nominated a second time, after his win last year for Crazy Heart. And..if Jesse Eisenberg or Jennifer Lawrence win in their categories, they’ll be the youngest ever. Not too shabby for a couple of twenty year olds. The fact that True Grit got a lot of play this year from the Academy, and got no love from the Golden Globes seemed to raise some eyebrows. BUT..the academy always seems to be in love with the Coen brothers, I really do think if they made a porno filmed entirely with a Sony Viewcam, a la Seth from Superbad, they’d probably get nominated too!
