Oscar Nominations Announced

So, the fact that the Academy Awards people are now nominating ten movies instead of five completely caught us off guard. Where the fuck is the joy of being nominated when you have nine movies along side you? Hell, there are only really 10 good movies, 10 Oscar worthy movies that come out every year. That’s why it used to be an honor being nominated. Now, it’s almost an expectation. Being nominated now? That’s like dating the office skank, and being pleased you got to first base, you need to round third homey!

It’s probably easier to tell you the movies that didn’t get nominated, but we’ll give you the rundown of the top ten. They are, Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, Up in the Air, Up, The Blind Side, A Serious Man, An Education, and District 9.  I used to have a tough time catching the five best pic nominations, this time around? I haven’t even heard of A Serious Man. Pleased as punch to see The Hurt Locker, Up, and Up in the Air on the top. You almost get the sense that Up in the Air in this ‘we’re all broke’ climate may pull a surprise ending of its own.

Now, the expansion of the category is a bit of a blast from the past, last time it was done was 1943 (Casablanca took that one), and the reasoning it was done was to give some play to mainstreamers, so why no Star Trek,or Hangover?  Because, when you give pompous, noses in the air folk more space and time, they’ll just be more pompous and noses in the air.

On a side note, we’re going to make a request that Jeff Bridges not be sitting right by the edge of the stage, spread eagle. The man tries to be pure bad ass, but he’s very distracting! And, as for the bad ass bit? You were in White Squall Jeff-o!

I’d really like to see “Up” win. What a fantastic movie by a world class studio with original storytelling and gorgeous scenes.

The first 10 minutes of that movie blows me away every time, not a single spoken word, and it still gets to you.
