No Scalping! Unless We Get Cut – VANOC

You gotta love capitalism, as it was on display at its absolute finest today, as wel as hypocrisy. If you remember VANOC took a holier than thou approach to scalping, stating that in no way would they allow the resale of Olympic tickets, and promising to hunt down anyone who tried to flip the tickets.

Today? VANOC released details on a fan-to-fan marketplace reselling initative. How does it work? Think more eBay rather than Craigslist. Sellers post their tickets, and set a sales price.VANOC takes a 10% cut from the buyer and a 10% cut from the sellers. The reasoning? Well, we know it’s easy money, but VANOC is stating that this method guarantees full venues and that it protects ticket buyers.

But, does it? Here’s one flaw we found. The ticket seller gets to keep their tickets, as VANOC will reissue new tickets to the sucessful buyer. Anyone looking to pull a con may try to sell their authentic but useless tickets that they still have on hand.

We’ve purchased a ton of tickets online and outside of venues, and have never had an issue, knock on wood. As a matter of fact, we’ve never even heard of anyone having issues, no matter what professional scalpers tell you.

We don’t mind VANOC making a little extra coin, at the end of the day it adds to the bottom line for the people of this province anyways. It’s just the way they approached the whole situation.
