George Steinbrenner Dies at 80
You can’t say he didn’t have a good run. A man who was as synonymous as New York and winning, as the Yankees themselves passed away on Tuesday after suffering a massive heart attack. George Steinbrenner was 80. The family of the Yankees owner confirmed his passing in releasing a statement.
Steinbrenner might have been the most colorful owner in all of sports, he ran the team since 1973, and only recently handed over the day to day operations to his sons. He was known for having a fiery personality, especially with his managers. One of those managers, Billy Martin was either fired or quit five times. Steinbrenner was also known for running his teams with a strict hand, implementing a strict grooming policy, no beards or hair past shoulder length for any of the men within the organization.
Those who didn’t follow baseball, but follow fantastic television would recognize this clip from Seinfeld. You see, Larry David would often do the voice of Steinbrenner, a very loud, brash characterization, but in this one scene ‘The Boss’ actually came on himself.
