2012 is slated to be an amazing year for the movies, there are a few big budget releases, some remakes, some sequels, and a few where you just wonder, ‘why would they do that?’. Blogtrot will preview movies that stand out month by month, movies that will catch your eye, for good and for bad. We’ll skip January, because it’s already started, hop right into February.

February

We start with a scary movie, because, don’t we all love scary movies? February has three big horror movies dropping in theatres, The Innkeepers, Chronicle and The Woman in Black. The Innkeepers doesn’t really have any household names for actors, and tells the age old story (aren’t they all) about a haunted inn. Chronicle is about a group of kids who all of a sudden get special powers, and while not such a horror movie in the traditional sense, definitely has tinges of the unknown and suspenseful thrills. The Woman in Black is Daniel Radcliffe’s first big movie after the Harry Potter, and I’m thinking Hoggwart’s favourite son went with the right movie, especially with James Watkings behind the camera. Check out the Bram Stoker’esque trailer below for The Woman in Black

February, of course, is known for the romantics and suckers that fall for the commercialism of February 14, so, RomCom’s are going to be on the forefront in second month of the year. Now, Madonna is even in the mix, with a movie that she directed, titled WE, telling the story of the King of England that abdicated his throne for a divorced American woman. The story is a classic, and has so many layers to it, it’s a shame that Madge’s movie doesn’t look like it hit the target. There’s a romcom starring The Offices, John Krasinski, and Drew Barrymore, and a bunch of whales. It seems more like a made for TV movie, than a movie that belongs on the big screen. There’s also ‘This Means War’, starring Reese Witherspoon, and two guys who’ll play big in summer blockbusters, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. It’s a Spy vs. Spy, who gets the girl kind of flick, but a RomCom can never really be an action flick, every guy knows that, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to keep you the whole way. The Vow is the movie that you’re going to get dragged to. It stars Channing Tatum, and Rachel McAdams, the couple your girlfriend wishes you guys were. The story is kind of a serious ’50 First Dates’. Check out the trailer, and just give in.

Wanderlust stars Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston as a busy working couple that all of a sudden find themselves unemployed, and end up at a commune. It’s got a solid cast, and is said to have Jennifer Aniston’s first shot at nudity in film. That’s right, so, why am I still typing? Why do I need to tell you anything else? Rachel gets naked in it. Seriously. Watch the trailer. Then count the days.

Other highlights and lowlights in the month of February include, another Ghost Rider, a Tyler Perry vehicle (Good Deeds), and another cash grab by George Lucas, Star Wars Episode I (in 3D)

Kick yourself. Scala & Kolacny Brothers were in Vancouver early this year, and performed at the Commodore. You likely missed it. The group is essentially a Belgian girls’ choir, conducted, arranged, and accompanied by Stijn and Steven Kolacny. They’ve dropped 5 studio albums, and are well known for special arrangements/covers of well known bands such as Radiohead, Oasis, U2, Nirvana, Depeche Mode and even the Mama’s and Papa’s. The video below is for an impressively good (as they all are) cover of Kings of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody’.

I’m not sure what hits me more, how absolutely solid this tune is or the fact that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals played Venue this past January, and it cost just $20 a ticket. Grace Potter, the pretty fit lead singer and her bandmates, hail from Waitsfield, Vermont. Grace Potter has received some critical accolades, and even had a tune featured on Disney’s animated feature, ‘Tangled’.

Click play, and just listen to the tune build, of course, it helps that Grace is easy on the eyes too…

People waste a ton of money and time ogling their iPhone and iPad covers and protectors, but I haven`t seen any that`s as cool or impressive as the new Miniot wood cover for the iPad. Check out the video of the cover made of real wood, it looks friggin`wicked.

Dr. Dre is finally back on scene, and who better to have as a sidekick than Eminem? Dropping the first single from the upcoming album, Detox, titled ‘I Need a Doctor’. It’s a pretty cool way to reintroduce Dr. Dre to his fans. The other part of the single that jumps out at you is the fact that Skylar Grey pops up on this as well. That’s right, the same Skylar Grey that killed it on Lupe’s newest single, and yes, the same one that wrote much of Eminem and Rhianna’s Love the Way You Lie, and a slew of other recent hits.

Consider 2011 not only as the return of good hip hop with albums from Dre, and Lupe, but the coming out party for Skylar Grey.

Taco Bell is in plenty of newspapers, and dining table discussions for all of the wrong reasons. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the fast food giant accusing that the Chihuahua championed joint has false and misleading advertising. An Alabama law firm that’s running the case is stating that the meat mixture that was found in restaurants was tested and found to contain less than 35% beef.

The lawsuit claims that the rest of the product is merely fillers, binders and extenders, and doesn’t even meet the minimum requirements set by the USDA to be labeled as ‘beef’.

Taco Bell has taken issue with the claim, obviously, and not only referenced ‘the millions of customers we serve every week’ but took full page newspaper ads, stating, ‘Thank you for suing us. Now, here’s the truth…’

Here’s also a video clip from Greg Creed, Taco Bell’s President. What do you think?

The Vaccines are from London, and were discovered via BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll. They’ve got an old school punk/jangly rock sound that works. Click play, and hope for a video soon. The track is called ‘If You Wanna’

Another year has come and gone and as we count down the final hours of 2010 we reflect upon a year that gave us many ups and downs and memories that will shape our lives for the future.

We witnessed some of the worst natural disasters ever in Haiti and Chile, and watched in disgust as the BP Oil spilled spread throughout the Gulf of Mexico. There was the heroic rescue of the Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 17 days. We saw the demise of sports’ top golfer Tiger Woods and championships go to New Orleans in the Superbowl, Chicago in the Stanley Cup, the L.A. Lakers in the NBA Championships, Spain in the World Cup and San Francisco in the World Series. There was the infamous late night television debacle between Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno and NBC. Our lives were all changed forever with the introduction of 2 new electronic devices from Apple, the iPad in January and the iPhone 4 in June. And many celebrated locally when Gordon Campbell announced he was resigning from his position as Premier of BC and the HST petition passed forcing a future referendum.

But without a doubt, our most memorable moment of the past 365 days has to be the 2010 Winter Olympics. Held right here in our own backyard, our country was swept up in all the excitement of these once in a lifetime games that were capped off by that fairytale ending, a 3-2 overtime victory over the US in the men’s gold medal hockey game. In the end we held one hell of a party for the world over 17 days and showcased some of this country’s finest athletes as well as a patriotism that no one never knew we had in us.

It’s hard to believe that it was almost 11 months ago that the party all started but the hangover still lingers today and will probably never fade.

Below we have posted a two-part video recapping some of the celebrations from across the country from that one memorable moment. Without a doubt everyone will always remember where they were when Sidney Crosby ended it all. CAUTION: These videos are bound to give you goosebumps. Enjoy and Happy New Year to all!

Research in Motion released a sneak peek of their new Blackberry 6 software as well as the upcoming Blackberry Bold Slider. I’ll be honest with you, in my opinion the Blackberry allows you to communicate more effectively with your friends and family. The iPhone is a better ‘gadget’, the apps allow you to connect with folks around you, and keeps you entertained. They’re essentially going after two different markets. I’m a firm believer that a Berry is the go to choice for a business user, where as an iPhone is the go to for everyone else. One of the things that sets the Berrys aside is the Blackberry Messenger, a fast, easy to use, intuitive instant messaging tool.

With the latest upgrades, RIM seems to be following in Apples footsteps in terms of the interface, it’s a shame they didn’t go a little outside of the box.
