Rick Santorum is a Republican politician, who was a lawyer before getting involved with politics, and acted as a representative, then a senator, and is now a candidate for the 2012 Republican Party presidential primaries. He was once considered an underdog, but recently won the Iowa caucuses, vaulting him back to the front of the leadership race. His time as senator saw him sponsor the Workplace Religious Freedom Act with US Senator John Kerry.

Dan Savage is a columnist, and, a gay rights activist, and, has a column, Savage Love, that is shared through countless publications, including local rag, The Georgia Straight. Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, actually began the It Gets Better project to help prevent suicide amongst LGBT youth.

So, how, you must wonder, do these two people, likely, on two different ends of the political spectrum cross paths? Well, through Santorum’s stance on homosexuality and gay marriage, but, you’re likely wondering, there’s lots of politicians that are against gay marriage and such, and there’s lots columnists that aren’t, why these two? To understand that, you have to understand the level of idiocy in Santorum’s comments.

In 2003, the AP was interviewing Santorum, and asked his views on the child sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Santorum responded by stating that the priests were engaged in ‘a basic homosexual relationship’, and went on to say that he had a ‘problem with homosexual acts’. Apparently, he doesn’t have a problem with paedophiles dressed up as priests. He continued that marriage was ‘one thing’, a relationship between a man and a woman, and he knew of no society, in history that treated it otherwise. He ultimately, juxtaposed same-sex marriage with the notion of marriage based on paedophilia or bestiality.

The fact that a member of public office, and now, a potential candidate for the US presidency, could come up with logic so ludicrous is nothing short of shocking, until you start actually paying attention to politics and politicians in general. His statement, drew a strong response from Savage, who launched a contest to coin a new definition for the word ‘santorum’. The winning definition is nothing short of awesome. Savage, set up a website that would keep the ‘slang definition’ of santorum alive and well on the internet. The site is a top result when searching for Rick Santorum, and political pundits refer to it as ‘Santorum’s Google problem’. Santorum actually tried to lobby Google to remove the search result, a request Google turned down, no wonder as Savage has been an invited speaker at the Google campus in regards to his It Gets Better campaign.

So, what is the definition?

Santorum is the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes a byproduct of anal sex.

Of course it is.

Michael Buble recently made some waves as he signed a one day contract with the Vancouver Canucks, and got to practice with the team in full gear. There’s no mistaking that Buble is a die hard Canucks fan, and has professed his love for the team a number of ways, including rescheduling a concert to catch a playoff game this past year, a move he got a lot of flack for. So, in honour of the crooner from Burnaby, we show 3 clips of Buble’s Canuck fever, including the track, Santa Baby (Buddy) from his Christmas album, where he’s replaced a line with ‘Canuck tix’. The second clip is fantastic.

So, Dave Bolland went on WGN radio the other day and talked about how much he hates Vancouver, and referred to the Sedins as sisters and they and the green men as ugly. First off, Dave Bolland calling anything or anyone ugly is like Patrick Kane making fun of someone’s ability to grow a beard.

So, here’s the thing, I’m not too fussed about what Bolland said, the guy is known as a chirper and agitator, and that’s what he does. Yeah, he plays Vancouver well, and he slashes his way into the heads of the Sedins, he’s still not newsworthy. At the end of the day, he’ll go down as a niche player, that many non Canuck and Hawks fans will have trouble remembering.

Here’s what pissed me off. The number of people agreeing with him on this mornings Vancouver sports radio. They are the clearest definition of uneducated, bandwagon hockey fans. Hell, some folks said that they’d rather have 1 Dave Bolland on their team, than both the twins. I’d recommend they have 1 stiff drink and two tylenol, and call sanity in the morning. There is no one player in the league that I’d trade straight up for the twins, outside of a healthy Sidney Crosby.

These are the same ‘Canuck’ fans that shout ‘hit him’ when the opposing player has the puck behind their own net prior to a rush. They’re the same fans that scream shoot it, anytime a Canuck has the puck in the offensive zone. They hold strong to the belief that the twins are soft, despite them playing injured, they believe that they’re non-playoff performers, which means they likely didn’t have a tv set these last two seasons.

Yeah, Dave Bolland is a pest, and is annoying, what’s more frustrating is the 1 out of 7 ‘Canucks fan’ who claims to know the game and team, yet asks why Raffi Torres is being benched.

I remember the off season for the Canucks a few years ago was deemed the worst off season in recent memory. The team didn’t perform anywhere close to expectations, Trevor Linden retired from the game, Markus Naslund was left to walk away, and then on one cloudy morning, we all learned of the sudden death of up and coming defenseman Luc Bourdon in a motorcycle crash. Well, all due respect to all of those involved that summer, the loss the hockey world had faced this summer is unthinkable.

A few months back, Derek Boogard was found dead of an accidental overdose, a couple of months later, former Canuck, and fan favorite, Rick Rypien died in an apparent suicide. It didn’t end there, former Leaf, Wade Belak was found dead in his condo. All three left behind friends and families. You’d think that’s all the tragedy the hockey world would have to suffer.

But, then yesterday we learned about a plane crash in Russia, carrying the entire KHL team Lokomotiv, including former Canuck Pavol Demitra. At last count, there were believed to be 44 people dead. Staggering. Imagine an entire sports team being wiped out, a key part of a cities culture, it’s dynamic. You think of Demitra, and you think of the tough times he went through when his wife was ill, and the leave that he took, and, of course, you think of his exceptional performance for Team Slovakia in the Olympics. How can’t you forget that stellar save that Roberto Luongo made off a Demitra shot, and the two embracing in the handshake line afterwards.

I think I speak for everyone, when I say Hockey Gods, please leave us alone for a bit.

Adele’s rescheduled show goes tonight at the Orpheum, with scalped tickets going at a truly premium rate. It’s one of those instances where you can see an artist in an intimate venue, when you absolutely know, that the next time they come will be an arena show. Hell, this show was supposed to go down at the Commodore, and had to get moved. It’s also one of those shows that’s going to be pure talent. I’d expect her to be back pretty soon. The track that’s gotten her all over the radio and internet is, of course, Rolling in the Deep. A tune that packs a serious punch, and more fierceness in the lyrics than all of Linkin Parks albums combined, maybe, that’s why they and every other artist has covered the track. Check out the video, which is equally good. That’s a rare feat!

Opening tonight is Wanda Jackson.

I was one of the unfortunate folks that witnessed our Vancouver Whitecaps get trounced this past weekend by the LA Galaxy. Now, going to Empire Field and its open air concept, gazing at the sun getting ready to set, while a few gorgeous mountains stand out is one of the best ways to showcase this beautiful city. Just don’t look at the pitch. But, every situation has a silver lining, and watching this poor performing team live has one as well, and it’s not Mother Nature. No, it’s the other great Canadian pastime. Beer.

That’s right, this past weekend I saw the results of some great thinkers. No, they didn’t find a cure for an ailment, they didn’t discover some new form of reptile, no, they created a system that let’s you get to a beer faster. God bless ‘em. We can only hope elementary schools will be names after these great men and or women.

What Empire has now launched and embraced is bottom filling cups and machinery that let’s servers fill more beers, faster. How does it work? Well the bottom is covered by a magnetic ring, and a FDA approved fridge magnet seals it up. The fridge magnet becomes a free value add and advert for the beer. At Empire, it’s Budweiser and 24 oz cups. Have a few of those and it won’t matter who wins or loses.

It’s still far too close to talk about the Vancouver Canucks coming within one game of the Stanley Cup, simply typing that out hurts. Starting to understand that a solid 60 minutes of hockey would bring home the Stanley Cup stings like nothing ever before. Instead, I’d rather talk about the pieces of shit that descended on Vancouver to cause havoc and damage to our beautiful city, and the shops and businesses that call it home. Who the fuck brings a backpack filled with hammers, goggles, and molotov cocktails to a hockey game? Criminals. That’s who.

I don’t how many douche bags I saw taking photos standing in front of burning cars or cop cars, or how many losers ran through a Coach or Louis Vuitton store to pretend to be something that they’re not. What did bring smiles to my face were the few citizens who didn’t just become bystanders by sticking around downtown, but stood in front of storefronts and fires, and cars, and refused to let rioters come close. Those guys made me proud, those guys were genuine Vancouverites, they were joined once the sun came up, and thousands of folks signed up and volunteered to clean up the city and mess that was left behind. Men, Women, and children armed with brooms, garbage bags, and dustpans descended on the downtown core and started to clean up others mess.

The Canucks had an amazing year, and accomplished so much individually and as a team, all of that pales in comparison to the Stanley Cup. At the same time, this team didn’t just squeak into the playoffs, they stormed into them. Played more games than most, traveled more distance, and simply ran out of gas at the very end. We’ll be back in the big dance, we’ll be back real soon.

These videos show people standing up for what they believe in, surrounded by idiots.

If you’re one of the guys who snuck in and damaged the car, hopefully you overcome a long, painful fight with a life threatening illness, and then walk out of the hospital to get hit by a bus.

Check out this one, the guy in the yellow polo top who seems so infuriated that there’s actually a couple of guys trying to stop random looting and violence, should lose his assginity in jail sometime real soon.

You’ve got to check out all three of these videos, all stemming from the current Stanley Cup Final. Featured here are Dallas Maverick’s star Dirk Nowitzki wishing fellow German, and Canucks offensive dman, Christian Ehrhoff and the Canucks the best of luck. Pretty sweet.

The next is Maxim Lapierre poking fun at Patrice Bergeron and the Alex Burrows finger biting incident. While, I’ll be the first to say that if Burrows did bite the guy, not the smartest of moves, you can’t help but poke fun at the way Boston media is dressing up the situation. Apparently, a finger from the late Macho Man Randy Savage was airlifted into Rogers Arena to replace Bergy’s lost digit.
