The more things change, the more they stay the same, training camp is one step closer to kicking off, with a few meaningless preseason games, followed by what promises to be a very exciting 2010-11 campaign for the Vancouver Canucks. The Sedin twins flew in this past week, and jumped right on the publicity train, doing a fan signing spot for Electronic Arts’ NHL 11 at Metropolis at Metrotown. On a side note, NHL 11 is shaping up to be pretty friggin’ amazing. Is it possible that it might actually surpass the beloved NHL 94?

The signing turned out to be a bit of a gong show, thousands of people showed up, and what turned out to be slightly organized chaos, resulted in random people from a mob of people at the entrance being randomly selected to get one of the twins autograph.

Follow this link to see the mayhem.

As I said the Canucks have started to filter back into the city, with one standout, Sami Salo. Sami Salo was seen arriving with a big ass cast, and a pair of crutches. From a busted nut, this guy goes to a busted foot. Sami Salo is a key piece of a rejuvenated blue line, as the team added Keith Ballard, and Dan Hamhuis over the summer. As a matter of fact, the Canucks made a few additions, making the team a favorite to hoist Lord Stanley’s mug in many a hockey magazine. I know, I know, we’ve heard that before, but this team has only gotten stronger, where as other teams, notably, Chicago, have gotten weaker. Plus, that whole North American city to host an Olympics then win a cup within a season points to success too!

This track is wicked, catchy as hell, with a great video to boot, it’s no wonder when we interviewed Tech N9ne last year, one of his dream collaborations was Cee Lo. Cee Lo defended the track as edgy art, and forward thinking, I say it’s just a great fucking song.

This one is called Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds, who is probably one of the more underrated actors in Hollywood at the moment. The movie is about a guy who wakes up in a coffin six feet underground, with no idea how he got there. Think Phone Booth meets Hope in a coffin a la Days of Our Lives.

It’s a tale of two movies, one will be the one that your lady will likely to drag you out to, and the other is one, you may need to drag her out to. They also show how you can make a trailer work really well, and how you bomb out on one. I still don’t get how Hollywood can continue to fuck up movie trailers, but you watch the trailer for Katherine Heigl’s ‘Life As We Know It’, and you’ve pretty much seen the entire movie. On the other hand, Danny Boyles, ‘127 Hours’ is so much more impressive. ESPECIALLY, when you don’t even know what the movie is really about after watching the trailer. (It’s based on the true story of Aron Ralston, a mountaineer who amputated his own arm with a dull knife to free himself from a boulder)

Blogtrot got taken out to a local mma event taking place at the river rock resort and casino. While, I am a fight fan, this was my first live mma event. Battlefield at the river rock kicked off last night with a long list of competitors. The main event of the evening was Chris Day taking on Gurdarshan Mangat, two Canadian fighters who’ve been getting a lot of buzz. A co main event was also billed with a well disciplined Matt Dwyer taking on Jacen Brooks.. All in all the experience was a good one. The crowd was strong and well behaved, even with peppering of Ed Hardy and Affliction shirted juice monkeys. I’m still a proponent to the law that if it looks like a shirt was made with a bedazzler, no man should wear it. Anyways, back to the event, the main card had three or four great fights, likely, with the Dwyer one standing out for me. Of course, as with any event, there’s always going to be a few oddities, this one included Steven Seagal at ringside. No celebrities though.

Thankfully the showtime commentary was left to mike Goldberg. The other crazy bit was some dude thought it’d be a good idea to propose to his girl at the event. The announcer called some seat number for a ‘raffle’ and when the couple came into the ring, it turned out to feel like a demented episode of punk’d. The dude got down on one knee and asked his lady to be the source of 80% of his frustrations in life, and she said yes. Ok, so, he didn’t say it like that. But, what the hell is so romantic about standing in a pool of blood? Maybe, its just seeing two men grapple and hug it out in the ring that brings out the love in folks. All in all, solid event, and aside from a couple of technical difficulties with the cage and a slightly longer than it should’ve been intermission, it was good night for MMA in Vancouver.

I was fortunate enough to be at Jerry Seinfeld last night at the queen Elizabeth theater. The city itself has been pretty fortunate in terms of big name stand up comics. Last few years we’ve had Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, and a few visits from Chris Rock, most recently, now, Jerry Seinfeld. So, four names that wouldn’t feel out of place on a top ten stand up comics of all time. Don’t email me and remind me that dane Cook and Russell Peters have come through, because those two, while they may be popular at the moment are nowhere close to the four names I mentioned. Back to last night, Mario Joyner, opened for the one time king of NBC, and if you saw Chris rock a couple of years ago, you recognized the name, face, and routine. He was funny, but he did the exact same routine as a few years back. So, unless it was your first time seeing the Chris Rock Show alum, he was a little disappointing. Jerry Seinfeld ran and sashayed across stage, his entrance, almost a surprise. Once the standing ovation calmed down, he spent the next hour and a half or so talking about everything from 5 hour energy drinks (who’s working 1 to 6?) to bathroom stalls (is it really that expensive to build that door to the ground?) and of course, plenty of jokes about family, marriage, and our obsession with coffee and gadgets. His humor was exactly what you’d expect, everyday and very relate able, clever observations. Seinfeld is a very clean comedian, so even when he throws in the odd ‘ass’, its almost distracting. He looked comfortable and in control the entire night, and at surprisingly spry 58 years old, he proved he could still make you laugh. The only bad thing was, while there was a Q and A the night before, there wasn’t on either show last night. The venue was great, and kudos to the QE theater for not raping people when it comes to parking. After years of recent gouging at the hands of ‘event parking’ within a 20 mile radius of Rogers arena, paying $40 for an unprotected parking stall seemed to be in line again. QE charged $10 on the night, not bad.

There was a tragedy down in Dallas, where a little Toronto toddler was forgotten in the backseat of a car, and subsequently passed away from the heat. I’m not going to question the judgment of the parents, apparently there was a lot of hustle and bustle, and multiple kids involved in a family reunion. A mistake with tragic results. What I question was some spokesperson of some child safety organization giving tips, what was one of them? Try to leave a very important item in the backseat or the floor in the back, an item like a cell phone or a wallet. So, we’re advised to put a cell phone to place value in the back seat? What about the bloody child!?! Have we become that kind of a society? That we need reminders for our children, that were more likely to remember a material possession than our own flesh and blood?

This weekend seems to be who’s who of entertainment options in Vancouver. Jerry Seinfeld ruled the stage last night and is set to add two more shows tonight. Early reports were that the funnyman killed, as did opening act Mario Joyner. Those who saw Chris Rock a few years ago will recognize that name. Taking the stage at Rogers arena tonight and tomorrow is Michael Buble, the hometown crooner is expected to deliver a high energy show. And if that wasn’t enough, Bryan Adams and the beach boys will rock empire field in celebration with the PNE 100 year celebration. If you’re lucky enough and minted enough to visit all three shows , you’ll have a pretty entertaining weekend, and expensive to boot!
